The 1st Annual Berkley Big Bass Lake Murray Challenge is set for October 2nd, 2010. The location of the inaugural event will be at Billy Dreher Island State Park.
The Big Bass Challenge is bass fishing's version of "Texas Hold Em," which matches angling skill with a weigh-in strategy. The competition day consists of six one-hour periods where anglers can weigh-in their single largest fish. Each hour an angler can bring one fish to the scales to try and stay in the running for a chance to receive one of the five, hourly cash awards.
Over $18,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded during the event, which include the hourly prizes and grand prize - guaranteed payouts regardless of field size. The exclusive aspect of this tournament is that only Berkley baits can be used during the challenge. Each hourly Big Bass Winner will be choosing an envelope at the end of the day for a shot at winning the $5,000 grand prize award.
"The tournament is a fun format to expose anglers to the full spectrum of Berkley baits," said Andrew Marks, Marketing Director for Berkley. "It is challenging to not only adjust to some of the new baits that are being used, but also the added strategy of when to weigh in your fish that lends a unique twist."
The Berkley Experience trailer, a 60-foot event center, will be on site from Friday at 2:00 PM until the final weigh-in and awards on Saturday. The trailer features Interactive presentation screens, educational seminars on line selection, reel maintenance, rod selection and selecting the right bait, a knot tying station and competition, bait demonstration tanks and many other fun elements designed to help the angers Catch More Fish. The Experience trailer will also have a good selection of Berkley baits for sale, if anglers have not already stocked up for the tournament.
To encourage Junior anglers to participate, the first 25 anglers under the age of 15 will receive a Shakespeare Catch More Fish Kit valued at $29.99.
More information can be found at http://www.berkley-fishing.com/myberkley/events or anglers can email Andrew Marks at awmarks@purefishing.com.
Berkley Co-Workers will also be fishing, but are not eligible for the cash prizes.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Reading, writing, and arithmetic seem a bit passé. Students today study anything from engineering to Mozart to interior design. Even fishing and conservation are on the curriculum in public schools with the help of the Future Fisherman Foundation and a grant from Pure Fishing.
“Pure Fishing is actively involved with youth aquatic education,” said David Lund, Vice President of Marketing -The Americas. “We are dedicated to engaging the public in fishing and conservation education and programs. We believe it is our responsibility to recruit new anglers. Bringing fishing opportunities to high school and middle school students is one way to fulfill that mission.”
Recent studies have shown that if a person does not engage in fishing activities by the age of 18, chances are they will never develop an interest. The Future Fisherman Foundation helps public, private and charter schools incorporate the benefits and rewards of fishing, boating and aquatic conservation activities into their school curriculum. Training and resources are available to school-based programs for grades K-12.
“Pure Fishing’s generous donation will enable us to teach our curriculum to educators who want to incorporate youth fishing activities into their learning programs,” said Foundation Executive Director Keith Sutton. “It also will allow us to begin creating online training opportunities that give educators a head start at implementing new programs in their communities. Without Pure Fishing’s support, this wouldn’t have been possible. We’re very appreciative they’ve shown leadership in supporting youth fishing education programs throughout the U.S.”
Pure Fishing also is supporting F3’s new Tackle for Educators program, which is designed to provide reasonably priced tackle for use by youngsters learning how to fish. “Qualified educators who sign up for the program can purchase rods, reels, fly-fishing tackle, accessories and more from a portfolio of Pure Fishing brands that includes Shakespeare, Berkley, Stren, Pflueger, Mitchell, Johnson and more,” said Teresa Rodriguez, the Foundation’s Director of Education.
Students in classrooms across America are learning everything from fish anatomy to how to bait hooks thanks to the Future Fisherman Foundation grant program. And with support from industry leaders like Pure Fishing, next year more students will be heading to the pond for final exams.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Berkley and The Berkley Conservation Institute continued to award Collegiate anglers with cash and prizes valued at over $3,000 at the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Championships. Berkley has been a proud sponsor of the premier collegiate fishing program and rewards numerous anglers throughout the year.
Berkley had two potential Big Bass awards at the Championships, which was held on Lake Lewisville. The team weighing the largest bass and displaying the Berkley logo on their jersey or hat could win $500. On day one, Eastern Kentucky won the award and Western Kentucky followed up on day two of the event.
The Berkley Conservation Institute awards the prestigious Collegiate Angler of the Year. This is the only award that combines angling skill and also requires them to utilize their education experience. Cody Salzmann from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point did an outstanding report on invasive species throughout North America and was awarded the 1st place crystal trophy and a check for $1,000. Cody detailed the species, life patterns and negative impact they are having on our waterways.
Shawn Stamps from Northwest Shoals Community College in Alabama was awarded 2nd place for a report on Conservation and Angling – preserving the tradition and received $500. Alex Craw from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga incorporated a conservation element into a future tournament that is being held by recycling used fishing line and promoting Berkley’s line recycling program. As an award recipient, Alex received $500 in tackle.
“The BoatUS Collegiate tournament series is one of our most exciting partnership programs,” said Andrew Marks, Marketing Director for Berkley. “The growth of the sport at this level and the professionalism that is displayed by these anglers is very positive for the future of our industry. While many of these anglers want to turn pro, others are looking for opportunities in the industry and this is also a great area for recruiting.”
Along with these great awards, every angler received a Berkley hat, spool of Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon, a bag of the new PowerBait Ripple Shad swim baits and a deck of Trilene Transoptic playing cards valued at over $40 at the anglers registration. The winning team of Ben Cleary and Bo Page from the University of Georgia also received an Abu Garcia Revo STX reel and Vendetta rod along with a spool of Berkley Trilene Transoptic line and digital scale.
