Call For Major Marine Fisheries Management Changes

Wed, 02/24/2010 - 09:49
Date location Event Summary or Teaser Body

As our economy struggles to regain its footing it is critical that we take a balanced approach to managing our natural resources.  We are deeply concerned about the economic damage occurring to our industry and many coastal communities by the excessive fisheries closures along the Mid/Southern Atlantic coast and in the Gulf of Mexico.  We have been working hard with our partners at the American Sportfishing Association and with other fisheries conservation leaders to find solutions.

The attached news release is a call to action for the Obama Administration that comes from a broad group of leaders in the sportsfishing and boating associations.  For over 70 years Pure Fishing has strongly supported sustainable fisheries and rebuilding fish stocks.  However, we must have the right tools to assess the conservation needs of the stocks and to accurately monitor fisheries in real time.  We must rebuild over time, without catastrophic closures that decimate the industry and the communities that rely on the recreational angler.

Sportfishing Industry and Partners Call on Administration to Make Major Marine Fisheries Management Changes

Immediate administrative action needed to avoid significant problems with fisheries management

WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 23, 2010 – Today, a coalition of marine recreational fishing, boating, and conservation organizations and businesses called on the Obama administration to take immediate action to address a crisis within the federal fisheries management system. In a letter to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), The Billfish Foundation (TBF), the Center for Coastal Conservation (CCC), the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) laid out an initial framework to immediately address serious and escalating problems resulting from inadequate implementation of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and the chronic problems that exist within the federal marine fisheries management system.

The coalition emphasizes that there are available administrative actions that can be taken right away to address the concerns of the sportfishing and boating industries and the nation’s 13 million saltwater anglers who depend on well-managed, healthy marine fisheries. Read the full letter sent to Dr. Lubchenco here:

http://www.asafishing.org/government/documents/NOAAMSALetterFINAL.pdf

Given NOAA’s recent ban on recreational fishing for red snapper from North Carolina through Florida and the potential for additional bans on key recreational saltwater fisheries, much of the frustration that exists in the grassroots recreational fishing community over these management decisions has boiled over into organized protests including, one being held Wednesday, February 24, in Washington, D.C.

With today’s letter, the coalition called upon the administration to:

Take decisive, immediate action to improve recreational fisheries data by redirecting existing funds and personnel to focus on real-time management data.
Collect socio-economic data on recreational fishing in the communities most likely to be impacted by near-term or expected fisheries closures.
Provide federal level direction to the fishery management councils to use common-sense in their management approaches while the administration collects the requisite data to make sound management decisions.
Develop a recreational fishing program and staff within NMFS commensurate with the national economic contribution of recreational saltwater fishing.

The coalition’s groups look forward to working closely with the Obama administration and NOAA to implement solutions to effectively deal with our nation’s marine fisheries resources.
Below are comments made today by the coalition’s group leaders:

American Sportfishing Association
http://www.asafishing.org

Mike Nussman, President and CEO

“We support healthy fisheries and good fishery management. It's good for anglers, our business and our economy. We’ve developed common-sense administrative and appropriations proposals that address the need for timely, accurate data while preserving efforts to rebuild our marine fisheries. We see these as a starting point for actions that must be implemented to address the short and long term problems.”

“Unfortunately, what we are seeing now is crisis management rather than fisheries management and this must stop before more jobs are lost and more of the nation’s recreational anglers are unnecessarily shut out.”

The Billfish Foundation
http://www.billfish.org

Ellen Peel, President

“Stock assessments for recreationally important species have been a lower priority for NMFS than is justified by the economic contribution of the recreational fishing community. Recreational fishing accounts for only three percent of the marine finfish harvested by weight, yet it produces 56 percent of the jobs from all saltwater fisheries.”

The Center for Coastal Conservation
http://www.coastalconservation.us

Jeff Angers, President

“The groups represented in this effort are demanding conservation-oriented measures that deliver the best possible opportunity not only for America’s anglers and the businesses that depend on them, but also for America’s marine resources to achieve their fullest potential. We expect to see the same commitment from NMFS. Their failure to do so has led to the current crisis of confidence and is threatening to bring the entire system to a standstill.”

The Coastal Conservation Association
http://www.joincca.org

Pat Murray, President

"There is a great deal of frustration among recreational anglers, much of it attributable to an agency that doesn't have the data, the science or the will to properly manage us. Recreational anglers have always been willing to do what is right to maintain healthy marine resources, but it is hard to have faith in many of the management measures we are seeing out of NMFS right now. There is a better path than the one they are on."

International Game Fish Association
http://www.igfa.org

Rob Kramer, President

“We must deal with the unintended consequences of the 2006 Magnuson-Stevens Act reauthorization. We hope that our recommendations will help to get this agency, on which 13 million recreational saltwater anglers depend, back on track.”

National Marine Manufacturers Association
http://www.nmma.org

Thomas J. Dammrich, President

“NOAA Fisheries’ severe restrictions on recreational fishing are a direct result of the agency’s failure to collect important data on these fisheries, including the impacts of recreational fishing and boating. Unless NOAA takes quick and decisive action to improve its data and management of recreational fisheries, these large-scale closures will drive down boat sales and negatively impact U.S. marine industry jobs.”

Abu Garcia and Berkley Sign Bradley Roy

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 10:55
Date location Event Summary or Teaser Body

Newcomer to the Bassmaster Elite Series Bradley Roy and fishing industry leaders Abu Garcia and Berkley entered into agreement for the upcoming 2010-tournament season. Effective January 29, 2010, Roy will fish his rookie season with Abu Garcia reels and rods along with Berkley line and soft baits.

“We are very excited to have Bradley fishing Abu Garcia and Berkley products,” said David Lund, Vice President of Marketing. “Even as a rookie, Bradley shows the determination and grit of the seasoned pro when it comes to competitive fishing.”

Featured on a video blog on Bassmaster.com, Roy will document the Elite Series season through his eyes. The videos will follow him throughout the season, which will be an account of the trials and emotions that this young angler will encounter during the 2010 season.

The Lancaster, KY native has risen from the ranks of the Bassmaster Southern Opens. Some anglers try for years to be among those who move up from the Opens, but Roy advanced after his first season. Roy is the youngest angler to ever compete on the Elite Series.

Roy has proven to be a force in BASS competitions. At age 13, he was the 2004 Bassmaster Junior World champion in the 11-14 age group, and as a seventeen year old he outperformed many other Kentuckians to earn the right to be the sole representative of his state in the 2008 BASS Federation Nation Championship.

“It is truly an honor to have Abu Garcia and Berkley as sponsors,” said Bradley. “Both companies are the leader when it comes to innovation in the fishing industry. I am very thankful for their support for the upcoming 2010 Elite series."

Cheryl Smith Wins 2009 BerkleyBigFish Grand Prize

Tue, 02/09/2010 - 10:53
Date location Event Summary or Teaser Body

Cheryl Smith loves to fish, and her desire to be on the water is paying off. Her infectious angling passion paid big dividends in the Berkley Big Fish (BBF) Contest for OutdoorGirl1, as she has become known on BerkleyBigFish.com. Smith landed the biggest prize offered – a fishing trip for two with legendary angler Hank Parker.

“I was up against a lot of great anglers on Berkley Big Fish,” said Smith. “The website is so much fun, I can’t get away from it. The voting and pictures that are submitted show that fishing is growing. Families and individuals still love to get outdoors and stay active.”

The St. Charles, Ill., native has been posting pictures of her and anything with gills on BerkleyBigFish.com since early 2009. She has won multiple awards on BBF, most notably being named Elite Angler for the month of April. Smith is also a five-time category winner and has marked her place as one of the standout anglers on the site.

“It’s so good to have a website that is all positive,” said Hank Parker. “Everything about the outdoors should be all about being positive. BerkleyBigFish.com is for any angler wanting to share their story. Cheryl was the crown jewel out of the 22 anglers selected for the Grand Prize. She is held in high regard from her competitors and myself as well.”

BerkleyBigFish is a Web site that celebrates the sport of fishing through creating an online community of dedicated anglers. The almost-12,000 users (nearly double from a year ago) can post photos that are entered into monthly contests and sweepstakes with the chance to win prizes from Berkley, Abu Garcia and other sponsors.

Users have the ability to comment on others' photos and rate them on a scale of 1 to 5 "bobbers." Five monthly winners are chosen from these votes based on fish specie (Bass, Trout, Walleye, Inshore Saltwater and Other), with one monthly Grand Prize Finalist being hand-selected by Hank Parker to be in the running for the grand prize.
In addition, monthly “Elite Anglers” are chosen based on skill level to compete for the grand prize alongside monthly finalists. Smith qualified for the grand prize by being named an Elite Angler.
