Shakespeare® Fishing Tackle was founded by William Shakespeare, Jr. in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1897. After designing a new level-wind system for existing reels of the era, he decided to start his own company which quickly grew to accommodate the big ideas William had.
Since its creation the Shakespeare® Fishing Tackle company has developed countless innovative products for every type of fisherman. One of the most successful projects was the unveiling of the Ugly Stik® in 1976. As quoted by Fishing Tackle Trade News in their March '76 publication " the Ugly Stik . . . may be the most remarkable product of the last two decades."
The Shakespeare® headquarters was moved to Columbia, SC in 1970 where it still resides. Today Shakespeare manufactures rods, reels, combos, kits, kids products and line for every type of fishing on earth.
