I travel from central Texas to the coast and am getting into surf fishing. Bought the Pursuit V 8000 combo with the 10’ rod and travel case. Figured it would be much easier to pack with all my family’s stuff for beach trips.
The case: very nice. Has a hard plastic piece inside to protect the rod pieces. Has padding to protect the reel. Seems well made midweiggt nylon with a handle and a shoulder strap. Two zipper heads on the zipper so you can position them how you prefer.
The reel: I know it’s an entry level reel for this task but out of the box it’s smooth. Handle changes sides easily. Drag is responsive and doesn’t make big changes with small turns. Spool has grippy center section for braid which is a plus. And I have to say this is the first “budget” line of reel I’ve bought in a long time that came sufficiently greased from the factory. Everything under the side plate has a healthy and evenly spread application of blue Penn reel grease. I know the drag on these is supposed to be run pretty dry so I’ll say it came greased as it should. But I applied a very thin but very even coat of grease to both sides of each washer. Reel comes open easily for drag or gear maintenance. Oh and the body may be graphite but all the gears inside are metal. Not CNC stainless but cast and machined metal.
The rod: 10’ and breaks down into 4 pieces. All go together easily and feel very secure put together. It’s a 10 foot surf rod so heavy and stiff. The guides don’t seem to be anything…
