The 12 ft rod feels unbalanced

After seeing the 12 ft casting version on sale, I decided to take a chance and test it out. Here is my breakdown of the pros and cons:

    The Good

Aesthetics & Build: Striking color and generally well-built.

Components: Features all-steel guides and decent overall hardware.

Action: The soft tip provides a nice feel for casting.

    The Bad

QC Issues: The end of the female blank section arrived seemingly unfinished (about 1/8"). Concerned about potential delamination or cracking, I proactively applied clear nail polish to seal it.

Ergonomics: This is the primary dealbreaker. The rod is quite heavy and features a comically short handle relative to its 12 ft length. During testing, I found it physically impossible to control the cast with the reel in the standard position. It feels as though the R&D team never actually tested this specific length in real-world fishing conditions.

    Proposed Solutions

To make this rod functional, you must increase the distance between your arms during the cast. I’ve identified three ways to address the leverage issue:

    Option 1: Low-Mount (Euro Style)

Reposition the reel to the "down" position, roughly 6–8" from the butt. You can secure it using electrical tape, a sliding reel seat, or a clip-on plate seat.

Pros: Allows the dominant hand to grip much higher on the blank; the reel weight acts as a counterweight to balance the long rod.

Cons: Reeling feels unusual, and you must control the cast with your non-dominant thumb.

    Options 2 & 3: Foregrip…

Thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed and thoughtful review. We’re glad to hear you liked the aesthetics, components, and action, but we’re sorry to hear about the QC concern and, especially, the balance and ergonomics issues you experienced with the 12 ft model.

Your feedback — including the suggested solutions — is incredibly valuable, and we’ll be sure to share it with our product development team for review. We truly appreciate you giving it a try and sharing your honest insights.

    Long time ugly stick user

Got as a gift 2 weeks ago, mentioned it to wife, following week it was in my hands. mounted ATS 30 with 50 lb. Braid. Rod and reel combo work great. Have an older white cat pole that has caught many cats. Looking forward to hooking into some big fish. I have used Ugly sticks for many years. Only poles that have broken were crappie poles. Mainly due to being stepped on. I fix them and keep going. These poles may not be the most expensive, but have served me well over the years

    Great feel and excellent construction

For river fishing for catfish, this rod is perfect. Works tremendously well for both casting and fishing off the side of the boat. Great feel when bait is hit! I will definitely be switching my older rods to this rod.

    Great Rod

I purchased the 8' Catfish Special casting rod, and paired it up with a Ambassabuer 6500 C3 Reel. I plan on catching many catfish on Lake Texoma with it
