Building off of our proven IPX6 sealed body and spool, we redesigned our Slammer® drag system to not only be better sealed, but also offer a wider range of usable drag, all while being bearing supported for extra smoothness. Adding our all brass CNC gear technology, 8+1 stainless steel bearing system and Hydrophobic Line Roller Bearing has made the Slammer IV the ultimate workhorse reel. ##Key differences for the 2500 are listed in the feature bullets.

    One of my favorite reels!

    The Penn Slammer 5500 is one of the smoothest and most well-built reels I’ve used. It’s sealed extremely well, which gives you confidence fishing in any conditions, and the reeling action feels incredibly refined and solid. The design is also top-notch — easily one of the best-looking reels out there. I especially like that it auto locks when the spool is open and you start reeling, a feature you won’t find on the Authority. Overall, it’s a strong, smooth, and great-looking reel that performs exactly how a high-end setup should.

    Smooth, reliable, excellent value

    This is my third Slammer IV purchased over the past few years. I now own the 3500, 4500, and 5500 models. My fishing is mainly northeast surf casting (Sandy Hook and Martha's Vineyard), and for this I prefer the 3500 and 4500. I find the 5500 to be a bit heavy and oversized for surf casting, so it's rarely used. I'm sure the 4500 can handle anything I'd be after, which is bluefish, striper, albacore, and bonito. Last year I landed a great 13 lb alibi on the 3500, with a matching Penn rod. It was a fantastic fight and the fish was good for the daily 1st Place False Albacore prize in the Derby (see photo). I like the smooth, quiet retrieve and excellent line lay. Casting is smooth and the bail is reliable, for the most part. I only snapped off about three lures due to the bail slamming closed on me during the cast, probably these incidents were my fault and happened mostly at night. I compared these reels to the Japanese brands and found Penn to be the best value overall. The build quality is definitely there. Recommended.

    I’ve used the reel for a little while and it’s great. Even with salt water in it it’s easy to clean.
